A Newspaper's Demise

The Keene Sentinel marks the end of publication for the Eagle-Times of Claremont:

But the deepest tragedy in this event is not for the newspaper’s employees, most of whom will eventually land on their feet. It is for the residents of Claremont and environs in Vermont as well as New Hampshire. The newspaper was formed as an amalgam of the Claremont Daily Eagle and the Bellows Falls-Springfield Times Reporter. As such, it was a bridge paper, bringing critical information from Concord and Montpelier to people in the two states. And the quality of its journalism had improved since it bucked industry trends in the 1990s and returned to local control under its current owner. The region has lost an important watchdog, monitor and guide.

People turned to the Eagle Times for news of the schools and school policy, for profiles of, and news about, local officials and candidates, and for reports on significant events in the region. (more)
