Foster's looks at the choices budget writers made last week, and calls for real sacrifices to balance the budget and reduce state spending:
What is called for in the fiscal years ending in 2010 and 2011 is a budget that reflects the need for real frugality on the part of state government. Broadly increased taxes must not be an option. It is fiscal insanity to impose higher taxes on people and businesses who are reeling from the effects of one of the worst recessions in 80 years. It is similarly irresponsible to initiate programs that will have a negative social impact on our state and New Hampshire communities.
Businesses in the Granite State have been struggling to cope with hard times for almost a year. In many instances, their employees have had to share in the discomfort and sacrifices.
Layoffs do not represent a wish of employers. They reflect the reality of the times. The economic downturn of 2008-2009 is a symptom of things gone wrong and the likelihood they will not return any time soon to the way things were.
